NEW AND SEALED
This crumbling jewel of Northern Italy, built completely on marshland, is steeped in history and irresistibly imbued with romance. Known as “The City of Light” and “Queen of the Adriatic,” Venezia is indelibly tinged with dark intrigue, decadence and decay. Comprising 118 small islands along the Adriatic Sea, Venezia was a maritime power during the Middle Ages and Renaissance, and a staging area for the Crusades. The city’s long decline began some 500 years ago; but its survival of two episodes of the Black Death, and the loss of its thousand years of independence to Napoleon Bonaparte in 1797 – as well as the fact that it appears to be sinking slowly into the waters on which it is built – has only added to its mystique. This beautifully produced book brings together a collection of haunting images quietly made by Michael Kenna over the last 30 years, many of which are published here for the first time. Arguably the most influential photographer of his generation, Michael Kenna is the subject of over 35 monographs. The images in Venezia are part of a large retrospective exhibition of Kenna’s work at Palazzo Magnani Museum, Reggio Emilia, Italy in Spring, 2010. This first printing of Venezia is limited to 2,000 hand-numbered, slipcased copies.

Monica Haller - Riley and His Story BACK IN STOCK

Monica Haller - Riley and His Story
One Star Press 2009
hardback, 1st edition
480pp
NEW
Monica Haller’s project Riley and His Story presents the daily life of the Iraq war, as lived and photographed by Riley Sharbonno, an army nurse who served at Abu Ghraib prison from 2004-2005. Riley used his camera as an almost prosthetic device to record the events his memory suppressed; on other occasions he used the camera to store overwhelming experiences with the aim of processing them later. Many of these images are indeed overwhelming–these aren’t the photos we’re likely to find in grandma’s photo album 50 years from now, he rightly observes–and the photo pages in this book are variously sized, creating intersection and overlap to mimic the unstable nature of such memories and convey the blurry jumble of amnesia and trauma. Riley and His Story is an invitation to all, including war veterans, family and friends, to encounter the realities of warfare as related by one who was there.

John Gossage - Here…Half Blind (SIGNED)

Rochester Art Center 2010
80pp

Newspaper style, 1st edition
NEW

From publisher: Since the 1960s, John Gossage has created photographs that are poetic, dark evocations of the edges of cities and the suburban, placeless landscape. In these extended projects, which have included Berlin (during the time of The Wall), Superfund sites, and the greater reaches of Washington D.C., Gossage has turned his camera to the forgotten, neglected and overlooked elements of the spaces which we pass through and sometimes inhabit. Working with a medium-format camera and films and papers that capture subtle tonal variations, Gossage presents a highly psychological view of our world today. In the spring of 2009, Gossage was commissioned by the RAC to make photographs in and around the neighborhoods of Rochester. The completed series forms an entirely new body of work, which comprises this exhibition, and begins to tell a unique story of our city, its people, and our environment. Eventually, this work will become part of a larger project by Gossage that considers the state of America in the 21st century.

Richard Prince - Adult Comedy Action Drama

Richard Prince - Adult Comedy Action Drama
Scalo 1995
hardback 1st edition
240pp
AS NEW

“Adult Comedy Action Drama is a visual diary mixing and mingling snapshots with found imagery of media culture’s detritus, inane jokes painted on canvas, trashy book covers, and cartoons from The New Yorker. It is a hilariously intelligent, delightfully wacky, and convincingly accurate portrayal of life in an era where real and fake, fact and fiction, media and everyday life have become almost undistinguishable. Adult Comedy Action Drama is both an inventive artist’s book and an overview of Prince’s work. Prince is an obsessive collector of images and a gifted photographer. From his immense archives he has chosen these pictures and arranged them into this truly contemporary, provocative, sexy, and political visual narrative. Prince plays with havoc with the 1970’s credo that the personal is the political and vice versa. It’s a sophisticated breviary for pop culture aficionados, art world mavens, and anyone enamoured or repelled by the late 20th century’s media madness.”

Rare book as featured in Andrew Roth’s 101 Books and The Open Book.

Christian Boltanski - The Possible Life of Christian Boltanski (SIGNED)

Christian Boltanski - The Possible Life of Christian Boltanski (SIGNED)

Museum of Fine Arts Boston 2009
256pp, hardback 1st edition
NEW

Christian Boltanski’s votive installations, archives and objects, revolving around the fragile polarities of memory and amnesia, identity and anonymity, have made him one of the world’s most renowned contemporary artists. And yet, despite the centrality of biography and testimony to his work, Boltanski’s own story is little known and has never been fully told. Published on the occasion of the artist’s sixty-fifth birthday, The Possible Life of Christian Boltanski, written in the form of a book-length interview (which the artist likens to a ‘psychoanalysis’ or ‘confession’) with the art historian Catherine Grenier, is Boltanski’s oral autobiography. In it, he recounts his unusual wartime childhood (’my mother hid my father under the floorboards. He stayed there for a year and a half, between two floors in the house. He’d come out from time to time-I’m living proof of that!’), his career, friendships and marriage, successes and regrets, his approaches to art and teaching, how he created various installations, his relations with dealers and the public, and other matters that illuminate as never before his complex, enigmatic works. Boltanski is refreshingly phlegmatic about the realities of the world (art and otherwise), and he relates his remarkable stories-some enormously amusing, others tragic-with a matter-of-factness and self-deprecating humor that highlight his capacity for humane responsiveness. As both the self-portrait of a major contemporary artist and a frank, fascinating memoir, this is a document of capital importance.
