Legendary photographer Toshio Shibata’s first monograph with Deadbeat Club is a true collaboration between artist and publisher. “I feel like this is a new interpretation of how I moved my subject from the night to the day,” he says of the book. “It even feels like some kind of destiny.” It’s a welcome fate for Shibata’s numerous admirers and collectors, as these 70 black-and-white photographs were made between 1980 and 1988 and have remained largely unpublished and unseen for some 35 years.

The structural concept is seemingly simple: a progression through a sequence of nighttime photographs into a set of images made in the day, but – as always with Shibata – nothing is as straightforward as it first appears. Intense light sources, both indoor and outdoor, make the nocturnal scenes even stranger than they would be if enveloped in darkness. As for the daylight pictures, heavy masses of constructed earth and stone serve to ground us in a world that is anything but bright and airy. And in the pivot between day and night lies a foreboding tunnel that subsumes both the luminous and the murky.

As the title Day For Night implies, it is in Shibata’s camera that light and darkness swap roles. “The title gives another layer to the book,” he says. “I knew that technique since my childhood through watching ‘Rawhide’ on TV but until now I’d never seen my own work with such an eye.” The result is a book that confounds expectations, not only for its viewers, but even for its maker.

The Long Shadow: Unwrapped ~ Marion Post Wolcott’s Labor and Love reveals the unpublished life and images of the American photographer Marion Post Wolcott¹ (b. 1910, d. 1990). Wolcott was the first woman hired as a full-time photographer for the Farm Security Administration in 1938 during America’s Great Depression. Three years later, having made more than 9,000 pictures, Wolcott received ultimatums from her husband, Lee Wolcott, and boss, Roy Stryker: choose love or photography. Wolcott quit her job and spent eleven years managing three dairy farms in rural Virginia. She became a farmer and a farmer’s wife. She raised four children, did housework, milked cows, learned to use machinery, and repaired farmhouses. One assumed that Wolcott gave up photographing. That assumption was wrong.

The Long Shadow is a homage-style reflection on a female icon of photography. Drawing from Wolcott’s archive of unseen intimate portraits and through conversations with her family, Anglo-Australian photographer Odette England (b. 1975) juxtaposes them with her photographs and prose rewritten from interviews and historical records. She responds to similarities between her and Wolcott’s ways of seeing. England’s daughter Hepburn (b. 2010) shares the story as a photographer and muse. This unique collaboration celebrates the unknown sides of a woman whose professional career ended in 1942 and who sought solace in making photographs in the shadows.

The book contains a preface and prose written by Odette England as well as 19 unpublished photographs by Marion Post Wolcott.

¹ Marion Post Wolcott studied in New York and Vienna and was as a freelance photographer for Life, Fortune, and other magazines. Upon Paul Strand’s recommendation, who helped establish photography as an art form in the 20th century, Marion became the first female full-time photographer at the Farm Security Administration and only the second woman hired on the project after Dorothea Lange. From 1942 onwards, after her departure to focus on family and farming, Marion never photographed professionally again but did not stop taking pictures.

The pond at Upton Pyne formed at the site of an eighteenth-century manganese mine.

Located on land owned by a local family who were involved in the mining venture, the first excavations began in March 1788. It was originally an open-cast mine employing just a few men who worked with ladders, picks, shovels, horses and carts. The quality of the ore in the load was rich, and once refined it was shipped from Exeter Quay to London and Bristol, where it was used predominantly in the production of glass. After a bright start the output of the mine steadily diminished and by 1823 it had ceased production, leaving a large pit, shallow on the east side near the road and becoming deeper towards the west, where it is overhung by a cliff.

Known locally as ‘The Black Pit’, it gradually filled with water to form a pond. Within living memory the land around the pond had been used to keep the village pigs and to grow vegetables. However, over the years, as so many relics of the Industrial Revolution, it became increasingly derelict, full of discarded household goods, a car, farm and garden waste and fallen trees.

This is a story in three parts. The first two are built around the three-year cycles of the two projects to improve the pond. The third is a short epilogue that places the site in a wider geographic perspective.

The pictures present a collection of histories. Within the broad sweep of time they encompass a thousand years of a large estate on the borders of a city that has since Roman times been a regional capital; the comings and goings of the Industrial Revolution; the decline of agricultural life with the advent of modern farming; and the urbanisation of village life.

Within the span of the six years the pond had risen and fallen, trees had collapsed while others grew, herons and a kingfisher had returned, the roof of the shed adjacent to the pond had fallen in, the collection of farm machinery had grown, and the number of ducks living in and around the pond had significantly increased.

Running as threads through the work are the myths that pervade our imaginations and motivate so many of our actions; and the wonder at what we too might leave behind.

“HERE AND NOW” is a photographic picture book that combines the poem by Shuntaro Tanikawa and photographs by Rinko Kawauchi. This book was created based on the lyrics written by Tanikawa for Ikuko Harada’s song, “HERE AND NOW” which emerged from the planetarium program, “Colors of the Dark” screened at The National Museum of Emerging Science and Innovation (Miraikan). Harada’s song, “HERE AND NOW” was included in her first solo album in 15 years released this year, and features voices of 0 to 91 years old, readings by Tanikawa himself, breath sounds, heartbeats, sounds composed by rei harakami, resulting in an 11.5 min epic musical piece. The project for a “book” kicked off when Harada visited Kawauchi’s photographic exhibition, “M/E: On this sphere Endlessly interlinking” when creating the music.

In this photographic picture book “HERE AND NOW” composed by Kawauchi herself so that the words and images respond to each other, its art director, Hideyuki Saito’s design leads the flow of the pages with each word encompassing a rhythm. As a fundamental poem, “HERE AND NOW” allows us to question one’s own existence, while also leaving room for a broad understanding of the piece. Layered with a series of fresh photographs from which we can feel our natural breath in tranquility, it guides us to a journey transcending time and space, while standing beside us. In the mid-1970s, Robert Adams began recording nocturnal scenes near his former home in Longmont, Colorado. Shikawatari (Deer Crossing” is Chieko Shiraishi’s long-awaited new work, released five years after her photobook Shimagake. In this black-and-white work, Shiraishi presents a series of poetic images taken in wintry Dōtō in Eastern Hokkaido. The central theme is a herd of deer that Shiraishi encountered while travelling; the shy animals wander the snowy landscapes, across frozen lakes and barren forests. Shiraishi keeps her distance to the animals. In some photos, they let her come near, but they always keep a watchful eye on her. She encounters other animals as well – large birds, foxes – and wide, clear landscape shots give us a sense of the surroundings. Shiraishi’s series masterfully creates a sense of wonder, as if one is at the doors to a world of magic realism, as if the deer have decided to permit us access to an otherwise secret part of the natural world.

Albarrán Cabrera’s poetic universe invites us to immerse ourselves in nature, in the land of trees and on what trees can teach us about life.

The idea for the book comes from a text written by Hermann Hesse that can be described as one of the most beautiful love letters to trees. Hesse tells us that “when we listen to trees, we discover the meaning of life”, thus in this book Albarrán Cabrera explain that by shooting trees they have learnt not only how to listen to them but also to better understand themselves.

The images alternate between a palette of vivid colours, bordering on abstraction, and more monochrome tones, evoking a certain melancholy, plunging us into timeless landscapes. The result is a dreamlike, almost surreal world, unique to the Spanish duo. Far from idealizing nature, the photographers aim to magnify what already exists, quoting their words: “We believe that to be human is to understand nature not just as it really is, but also as we perceive it. If we are alert and observant, we will be able to understand it from these two standpoints. As if we are both seeing and been seen.”

Two texts by German novelist, poet and painter Hermann Hesse punctuate this visual corpus. A text by Yves Darricau, agricultural engineer and author, tells the story of the relationship between man and trees, from prehistoric times to the present day. It talks about how each has contributed to the development of the other in a relationship of interdependence that is now under threat, making us all aware of the importance of trees in the face of the challenges of our century.

During most of World War II, Argentina maintained close ties with Germany and remained neutral for its hundreds of thousands of immigrants living in the country. After the war, it became the main safe haven for fleeing Germans, while President Juan Perón ordered to secretly smuggle in those with particular military and technological expertise that could help his country forward. One of these people was Austrian-born German scientist Ronald Richter.

Convincing Perón about the feasibility of generating unlimited energy through nuclear fusion, Richter managed to receive massive funding to build an experimental fusion reactor on Huemul Island, near the town of San Carlos the Bariloche in Patagonia. After two years of construction, Perón publicly announced that Richter’s experiments had been successful, adding that it all came down to “lighting up artificial suns on the Earth.” Worldwide interest and significant scepticism followed, and after a year of reporters and other scientists visiting the island to try to investigate the unsupported claims, only to be denied access or explanation, the truth came out about Richter’s deceptions and Project Huemul came to an abrupt end.

With the strange history of power and intrigue in the back of his mind, it was Huemul Island, among the many small islands in Nahuel Huapi Lake, that attracted the attention of Pablo Cabado (AR). In Little Suns on Earth, this history becomes tangible with Cabado’s tritone photographs depicting a slow exploration of the deserted island, compiled from his many trips over a period of six years. Overgrown tracks, ruins of buildings, defaced walls with swastikas, bullets and electrical elements scattered around the area are the only remnants left of the secret development that took place.

The visual narrative is coupled with an illustrated essay by historian Diego Castelfranco, comprehensively elaborating on the strange and monumental history of this scientific autocracy, and the dream that was never attained.

Kenna has selected one image for each year beginning 1973, when he enrolled in the Banbury School of Art, and for each subsequent year. Following the “Photographs” section is “Stories,” in which Kenna gives context to each image and considers how it connected to his own life at the time.

We ran a healing center, a garden for people to come and rest from their struggles. When it had eventually dissolved, I was wounded. Having once been the healer, I was too afraid to ask for help. Where we lived in the mountains, people would often exclaim how lucky I was to live in such a paradise, one which, for me, carried the ghost of a broken ideal. It became a cave of guilt and shame. Natsuko and the animals, the small slant of light that shone through the cracks of my depression, were emblematic of the freedom I longed for. Through them I could dig my way out and reencounter the beauty of what we really are in this world. I could find my role again.

"James’ House is my second book in The Greenland Trilogy. My first book Sabine from 2004 was a love story, and so is James’ House. It’s about my love and admiration for an Inuit man and his continuous fight to provide for his family. The story takes place from 1999-2002 when I lived in Eastern Greenland trying to become a hunter and a fisherman while taking pictures of the life I shared with the people living there.
James was my friend when I lived in Tiniteqilaaq. He taught me how to spot seals and use the tools of a hunter. He taught me when to speak and when to be silent. How to be present. 

For the years I was in Tiniteqilaaq, James’ House seemed like the center of the universe. It was a house full of laughter, crying and silence. A place of warmth and embrace. Today the house is empty. James’ wife passed away and he moved with his children to the nearest town, Tasiilaq.  This book is a memory of the time and love I shared with James and his children."

Los Angeles: Landscapes of Four Ecologies, Volume 1

For the past decade, photographer Mark Ruwedel has been compiling an epic photographic account of the natural environment of his home city of Los Angeles. From the stark Californian coast to the vast expanses of the interior – many of which have been further lain bare by wildfires – Ruwedel tracks a unique ecology in constant, if subtle, dialogue with the human life that surrounds it: one where wildness is designed, contested, permitted, or resisted to varying degrees of success. In this first of four volumes, Ruwedel follows the Los Angeles River from Big Tujunga Wash to the Pacific Ocean. Using patient, forensic large- and medium-format photography in black and white, Ruwedel recalls the legacy of nineteenth-century photographer-cartographers such as Carleton Watkins and Timothy O’Sullivan, as well as land artists and New Topographics photographers of the 1970s, while forging his own elucidating relationship with the landscape. The series title Landscapes of Four Ecologies recalls architectural critic Reyner Baynam classic study Los Angeles: The Architecture of Four Ecologies, which describes the city as ‘one of the ecological wonders of the modern world’. The scale of this four-part project, Ruwedel’s most ambitious to date, is an artistic statement in itself: ‘When I say epic,’ he explains, ‘I am thinking of a project that is too large, which has porous boundaries, which is almost out of control.’

Alessandra Sanguinetti’s On the Sixth Day offers us a glimpse of life on a small Argentine farm from the perspective of its animals. Often photographed close to the earth, the images render the courage, struggles, and adventures of chickens, pigs, horses, and cows. We see them newly born, at play, vying with each other for food, their fate always uncertain as human presences inevitably loom above. With their rich, almost surreal colour, these photographs evoke traditional fables or classic children’s books in which animals enact human behaviours to teach moral lessons. Yet Sanguinetti portrays these animals as individuals in their own right, each with their own mysterious spirit, relating their lives from birth to death with an unsentimental and direct gaze.

First published in 2005 and now out of print, this new and expanded edition of On the Sixth Day includes additional unseen images.

Legendary photographer Toshio Shibata’s first monograph with Deadbeat Club is a true collaboration between artist and publisher. “I feel like this is a new interpretation of how I moved my subject from the night to the day,” he says of the book. “It even feels like some kind of destiny.” It’s a welcome fate for Shibata’s numerous admirers and collectors, as these 70 black-and-white photographs were made between 1980 and 1988 and have remained largely unpublished and unseen for some 35 years.

The structural concept is seemingly simple: a progression through a sequence of nighttime photographs into a set of images made in the day, but – as always with Shibata – nothing is as straightforward as it first appears. Intense light sources, both indoor and outdoor, make the nocturnal scenes even stranger than they would be if enveloped in darkness. As for the daylight pictures, heavy masses of constructed earth and stone serve to ground us in a world that is anything but bright and airy. And in the pivot between day and night lies a foreboding tunnel that subsumes both the luminous and the murky.

As the title Day For Night implies, it is in Shibata’s camera that light and darkness swap roles. “The title gives another layer to the book,” he says. “I knew that technique since my childhood through watching ‘Rawhide’ on TV but until now I’d never seen my own work with such an eye.” The result is a book that confounds expectations, not only for its viewers, but even for its maker.

This volume, presenting Calle's installation of Rachel Monique at the Palais de Tokyo, was designed in close collaboration with the artist. The cover text is embroidered to create a precious object, and all of the texts relating to the installation are beautifully embossed. Sophie Calle: Rachel Monique is a highly personal and moving book, intimate and universal in its expressions of mourning and memory.

The pictures in Jason Lee’s forthcoming monograph were made in the summer of 2017 on a drive from his then adopted home state of Texas to Los Angeles, where he’d lived prior and from where he set out to start photographing from the road in 2006.
 
TX | CA 17 is the first time Lee has published images from a single outing. They are presented in geographical and (rough) chronological order—North Texas, NM, AZ, the California desert, and finally DTLA, where we see the gentleman awaiting his bus. The exposures were made primarily along and surrounding Highways 287, 40/66, 62, and 10.
